Grey Bassendean sand: fast-draining and water-repellent
Soil — Bassendean sands. This grey sand belt is notorious for dry patch — hydrophobic by mid-summer. Split cycles inside one watering window, wetting agents and even sprinkler coverage are the local formula.
Groundwater & bores. Good bore country: the superficial aquifer is within practical drilling reach under these sands. Watering from a bore costs pumping power rather than scheme rates — with the same 2-day roster and winter ban as everyone else.
Rainfall — about 718mm a year. Around 718mm falls annually (Perth Metro data), close to 79% of it May-September; gardens rely almost entirely on reticulation from November to March, when scheduling accuracy matters most.

Why the Embleton sprinkler broke in the first place
An Embleton site reported a broken sprinkler on station 2. Our technician replaced it — and then answered the more useful question, which is why it broke.
The head was sitting too high, standing proud of the surrounding surface rather than flush with it. A head in that position is in the path of every mower, wheelbarrow and footfall that crosses the area, and it will be broken again.
Setting it at the correct height is what stops the repair repeating. Our technician also checked the surrounding pipework to confirm there was no leak behind the break, and adjusted the controller to run the system more waterwise.
Recording why a head failed, not just that it failed, is what separates maintenance from a cycle of replacements — the same head breaking every season is usually telling you something about its height or position.
Drip line and micro spray repairs in Embleton
