Old brass fittings on an Inglewood system
An Inglewood complex had a station at the rear throwing water over the boundary fence — wasted water, and a nuisance to the neighbours. Our technician capped that pipe with a 20mm PVC cap, then found the more significant problem further along the same line: a leak on a very old brass pipe and joiner that had deteriorated.
Brass fittings of that age are a known weak point in older Perth systems. They corrode from the inside, so a fitting can look sound while its wall thickness has gone, and they tend to fail at the joiner rather than along the pipe.
As an interim measure the wire was removed from that station's terminal at the controller so the line could not be pressurised and leak again before proper repairs. Isolating a failing section electrically is often the quickest way to stop water loss on the day.
