Sand over limestone: what it means for your retic
Soil — Spearwood sands. Yellow Spearwood sand over limestone drains freely, so splitting your watering-day run into two shorter cycles, with a wetting agent, beats one long soak. The shallow limestone also makes trenching for repairs harder than it looks.
Groundwater & bores. Domestic bores perform well across this sand-plain suburb, and an older bore is often worth servicing rather than abandoning. Bore watering follows the standard 2-day roster and the June-August sprinkler switch-off.

When replacing the valves doesn't fix it, in Ardross
An Ardross system had three defective valves — the master valve (the main valve that shuts the whole system off) with a split diaphragm, and the station 1 and station 3 solenoids (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) — and our technician replaced all three. The honest part of this job is what happened next: it did not resolve the problem.
We had told the owner beforehand that the solenoids were the likely cause, and after replacing them there was no improvement, which means the fault lies elsewhere in the system. Saying so directly is better than presenting the valve replacements as a fix.
The short-term option discussed was to top-lay poly from the top steps through to the deck, restoring water to that area without excavating while the underlying cause is worked out. Three genuinely faulty valves still needed replacing; they simply were not the whole answer.
Checking an Ardross system over a high water bill
A high water bill and a suspected leak were behind this Ardross call in autumn 2026. Our technician tested all four stations to find where the water might be going.
The testing found only one broken sprinkler and a broken poly fitting, both on station 1. The sprinkler was replaced along with its 19mm poly fittings, one Toro nozzle was swapped, and the controller was programmed correctly before we left.
