Sand over limestone: what it means for your retic
Soil — Spearwood sands. Sand over limestone drains rapidly and can turn water-repellent in summer — a wetting agent, plus splitting the run into two shorter cycles inside the same watering window (both before 9am, or both after 6pm), is the standard fix in this belt.
Groundwater & bores. Sandy soils over shallow groundwater make this classic garden-bore territory; running retic from a bore takes garden watering off the scheme-water bill. Bores follow the same 2-day roster and winter switch-off as scheme users.

Retiring the parts of an Applecross system that aren't needed
An Applecross system was serviced with as much attention to what could be removed as to what needed replacing. Three micro sprays and a micro riser (the upright pipe a sprinkler sits on) were replaced, and a leak in the poly repaired.
A micro spray near a window was capped off — spray against glass is a nuisance and does the planting no good. At the owner's request the poly line running along the fence was also capped: it had served an old herb garden that no longer exists.
Capping redundant lines is worth doing rather than leaving them live. Every emitter still connected draws pressure and water whether or not anything there needs it, so retiring the parts of a system that no longer serve a purpose gives the remaining stations more to work with.
The controller was then programmed correctly.
Chasing a buried station 2 valve in Applecross
Some valves are easy to find. The station 2 solenoid at this Applecross home, in May 2025, was not one of them: it eventually turned up deep under a shrub, pressed against a retaining wall where the line ran towards a set of steps. To follow the pipe, our technician lifted the steps and found 19mm poly running beneath them, plus a tee dropping through the steps to the verge.
The faulty solenoid was cut out and the valve repositioned. Running a temporary test wire suggested the common wire was at fault, and we showed the client several joins in the cabling that had just been wrapped in tape. Tape is no seal underground: moisture works in and corrodes the copper, and a common wire serves every valve on the system.
