An honest assessment of a Stratton system
A Stratton system had a blown master solenoid coil (the electrical part of that valve), which our technician replaced. Testing then showed a harder problem: the wire running to the master solenoid (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) is inoperable, and re-running it would be difficult enough that it is not a repair to attempt within a service visit.
The system had been poorly maintained over a long period, and the work required to bring it back is extensive rather than incremental. That assessment was reported plainly.
There is a point at which patching an old system stops being good value — where each visit fixes one fault and uncovers two, and the wiring is beyond economic repair. Saying so is more useful to the owner than another round of repairs that leave the underlying problem where it was.
The blown coil was replaced, so the system is in better shape than it was found.
