Sand over limestone: what it means for your retic
Soil — Spearwood sands. Free-draining yellow sand with limestone often close beneath — great drainage, poor moisture holding. Splitting one watering into two cycles inside the same window suits it, and retic trenching can hit caprock.
Groundwater & bores. The superficial aquifer here typically supports domestic garden bores — a big running-cost saving over scheme water for lawns. Note bore users now share the standard 2-days-per-week roster and the 1 June - 31 August switch-off.
Rainfall — about 718mm a year. Around 718mm falls annually (Perth Metro data), close to 79% of it May-September; gardens rely almost entirely on reticulation from November to March, when scheduling accuracy matters most.

A new system built zone by zone in South Perth
A South Perth installation shows how a system goes together when it is designed rather than extended. A 25mm PVC mainline was run through the garden bed to the lawn, with solenoid valves (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) placed by the pool housing and the lawn area.
The lawn was fitted with 20mm PVC feeding 75mm pop-ups and MP rotating nozzles. The garden beds were treated as a separate problem: 19mm poly along the front of the beds, with pressure-compensating spray stakes sized to the planting — two 20-litre-per-hour stakes to each large plant and one to each smaller plant.
That is the part worth noting. Lawn and garden beds have completely different water needs, and giving each its own pipework, valve and emitter type is what allows them to be watered on different schedules instead of compromising between the two.
A three-station tune-up in South Perth
