The surround holds the head at a fixed height, stops the surrounding soil settling away from it, and takes the load of anything that runs over the top — a mower, a vehicle, foot traffic — instead of the head and its riser (the upright pipe a sprinkler sits on) taking it. On a lawn that will be walked across constantly, it is the difference between replacing heads every season and leaving them alone.
