A Rivervale fault behind another fault
A Rivervale system was diagnosed from the controller outwards. Our technician suspected the master valve (the main valve that shuts the whole system off), took ohms readings to test the theory, then located the master valve and tested its coil, which read open rather than the 20-to-60-ohm band a healthy solenoid (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) should show.
The coil was swapped and the readings re-checked at the controller. That fixed the first fault and exposed the second: with the system now running properly, a leak became apparent on one of the lateral lines.
Running a different station showed the same lateral leaking again, which pointed at a valve staying open rather than a fault on that station. The solenoid believed to be stuck open was located and replaced.
Faults hiding behind other faults are normal on older systems — until the first is fixed, the system never runs long enough or hard enough for the second to show itself.
