Grey Bassendean sand: fast-draining and water-repellent
Soil — Bassendean sands. The grey sands here drain instantly and fight re-wetting in summer, so splitting one watering into two cycles inside the same window — with a wetter twice a year — is what works.
Groundwater & bores. Sandy soils over shallow groundwater make this classic garden-bore territory; running retic from a bore takes garden watering off the scheme-water bill. Bores follow the same 2-day roster and winter switch-off as scheme users.
Rainfall — about 718mm a year. Around 718mm falls annually (Perth Metro data), close to 79% of it May-September; gardens rely almost entirely on reticulation from November to March, when scheduling accuracy matters most.

Bore line and bubblers for a Lathlain garden
A Lathlain installation was built around a bore, with two new 25mm solenoid valves (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) positioned at the rear near the pump. The planted areas were run on bore-rated drip line rather than spray heads, and the fruit trees at the far rear were given adjustable bubblers.
Both choices are deliberate. Drip line rated for bore water resists the blocking that ordinary drip suffers on a sediment-carrying supply, and bubblers deliver a high volume slowly to a single root zone, which is what a fruit tree wants — a deep soak rather than a fine spray across the surface.
A 25mm lateral was run to the front and capped for future works, so that section can be extended later without disturbing what has just been installed.

Local reticulation questions
Yes, but only waterwise nozzles. Lathlain is in the Town of Victoria Park. All irrigation pipework and associated fittings are to be laid at a depth of not more than 300mm, nor less than 150mm, below ground level.
Generally yes — Lathlain sits over accessible groundwater, which is why garden bores are common here. That said, two neighbouring blocks can differ on yield and iron content, so it's an assessment rather than a given. Bores, pumps and bore-fed retic are all work we do.
Lathlain sits on Bassendean sands. That is Perth's least water-retentive sand, and the one most likely to repel water once dry. The most common thing we get booked for in Lathlain is controller work, so that's where the technician starts. Run times get set to put down roughly 10mm per rostered day, delivered in one or two cycles inside the same watering window, depending on how fast it soaks.
Water Corporation sets Lathlain's sprinkler days: check yours with your street number and postcode. In Perth and Mandurah that's two days a week, once before 9am or after 6pm, bores included; elsewhere the roster can differ. The winter switch-off runs from 1 June to 31 August.
