Wiring too close to the surface in Maida Vale
A Maida Vale property had a leak near the kerb, with no certainty on arrival whether it was a pipe or a solenoid (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) — a reasonable uncertainty, because both present as water surfacing in roughly the same place. Our technician located the station 1 solenoid and replaced it, along with the master valve (the main valve that shuts the whole system off).
The finding worth passing on is about the wiring: it was running very close to the surface, close enough to be in the way of the valves that had to be excavated, and it needed repair as a result. Shallow wiring is a recurring liability.
It gets caught by edging, garden forks and any excavation, and it means routine valve work risks damaging the cable that serves the valve. Where wiring is found running shallow, re-laying it deeper while the ground is already open is worth the small extra time.
