Hills gravel: slopes, runoff and uneven sprinkler pressure
Soil — Darling Scarp gravels. Gravelly hills soils shed water fast on slopes and hold pockets of clay below; short repeated cycles prevent runoff, and drip lines suit terraced beds.
Groundwater & bores. Hard lateritic rock under the hills makes domestic garden bores rarely economic here, so the wins are on the efficiency side: smart controllers, rain sensors, drip zones and a properly programmed winter switch-off.
Rainfall — about 1,093mm a year. Roughly 1093mm a year here (Bickley), with about 77% of it falling May-September — the long dry rest of the year is why controller programming and coverage checks pay for themselves.

Converting a Kalamunda system to rotator nozzles
A Kalamunda system was converted across to MP rotator nozzles, with the existing fixed sprays and gear drives (a rotating sprinkler for larger areas) replaced throughout. Sprinklers were also relocated, raised and replaced as needed to get the spacing and height right for the new nozzle type — a rotator's throw and pattern differ from a fixed spray, so positions that suited the old heads do not automatically suit the new ones.
The station time was then extended to match. That step is not optional.
Rotator nozzles apply water considerably more slowly, and converting a station without lengthening its run time leaves the area drier than before the upgrade, which is how a genuine efficiency improvement ends up blamed for killing a lawn. A station was also extended to include mist sprays under the covered area, and the controller battery replaced.

Local reticulation questions
Not without a permit. Kalamunda is in the City of Kalamunda. A person shall not plant a lawn or garden in a street, except pursuant to a permit issued by the council and then only in conformity with these by-laws.
Groundwater access around Kalamunda is limited, so bores are less common here and often not the right answer. A properly zoned system with matched sprinklers and a modern controller gets excellent results on scheme water instead.
Kalamunda sits on Darling Scarp gravels. On a slope that soil sheds water sideways before it soaks, and there are clay pockets underneath. The most common thing we get booked for in Kalamunda is controller work, so that's where the technician starts. We aim for around 10mm on each of your two watering days, and decide on site whether that wants one run or two cycles inside the same window.
Water Corporation sets Kalamunda's sprinkler days: check yours with your street number and postcode. In Perth and Mandurah that's two days a week, once before 9am or after 6pm, bores included; elsewhere the roster can differ. The winter switch-off runs from 1 June to 31 August. After it, the Bureau of Meteorology's Bickley station averages about 122 mm of rain in September and 67 mm in October, well above central Perth's 80 mm, so gardens here stay wetter into spring.
A controller repair isn't quoted: book the visit and it's diagnosed and fixed on site. An upgrade, say to Wi-Fi, can be quoted without a visit: tell us if your controller is hardwired or plugs into a power point (a photo helps). If it needs an electrician, we arrange one.
