Grey Bassendean sand: fast-draining and water-repellent
Soil — Bassendean sands. Leached grey sand with almost no clay or nutrient holding; it turns non-wetting in summer, so soil wetters and a well-programmed controller earn their keep here.
Groundwater & bores. Shallow sandy geology means bores in this area usually deliver reliable garden water; pairing one with well-tuned reticulation keeps large lawns affordable. The 2-day roster and winter ban apply to bore watering too.
Rainfall — about 718mm a year. Roughly 718mm a year here (Perth Metro), with about 79% of it falling May-September — the long dry rest of the year is why controller programming and coverage checks pay for themselves.

Two Karawara stations with no continuity
A Karawara site had two nozzles and a pop-up replaced during inspection, but the substantive finding was electrical. Stations 17 and 18 show no continuity — the circuit to those valves is broken somewhere between the controller and the field — despite three wires being present in the terminals, and there are six spare wires at the controller with no identified purpose.
Spare wires matter in that situation, because a broken run can sometimes be re-established by repurposing one rather than trenching a new cable. Re-establishing the verge and garden bed stations needs investigation to locate those valves and trace the wiring, and that work is currently blocked by vegetation and rubbish which has to be cleared before the ground can be accessed.
Reporting the sequence honestly is more useful than quoting work that cannot yet start.

Local reticulation questions
Yes, no approval needed. Karawara is in the City of South Perth. Reticulation should be designed to avoid waste — minimise spray drift outside the verge area and don't spray onto footpaths or roads. Verge rules are council-level; watering days aren't, and the two get confused constantly.
Generally yes — Karawara sits over accessible groundwater, which is why garden bores are common here. Iron staining and yield are the two things worth establishing before you drill, and both are local to your block. We handle bores, pumps and the reticulation they feed.
Karawara sits on Bassendean sands. That is Perth's least water-retentive sand, and the one most likely to repel water once dry.
