Sand over limestone: what it means for your retic
Soil — Spearwood sands. Well-drained yellow sands over Tamala limestone: water moves through fast, so a properly scheduled controller and soil wetters do the heavy lifting.
Groundwater & bores. This is favourable ground for garden bores — sand all the way to the water table in most streets. Bore-fed retic avoids scheme water charges, though the same 2-day roster and winter switch-off govern when it can run.
Rainfall — about 727mm a year. Annual rain near 727mm and strongly seasonal (~78% May-Sep at Swanbourne); the practical schedule is full summer duty, tapering shoulder seasons, sprinklers off 1 June - 31 August.

Adding a station in Claremont without a spare wire
A Claremont system had very low pressure, with pop-ups failing to rise — the classic symptom of too much demand on one station, or of a leak taking the pressure before the heads get it. There was a leak on the verge, which our technician repaired.
A new solenoid (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) was added to split the load, and the existing lawn solenoid replaced, as it had to be cut out. The wiring is where it got interesting.
There was a spare wire at the controller, the obvious way to drive the new valve — but testing showed it was open, meaning broken somewhere along its run and useless. Rather than trench a new wire, an add-a-station (a device that runs a second valve off an existing wire) device was fitted so the new solenoid shares an existing station wire.
Testing a spare before relying on it saves discovering the problem after the trench is dug.
A master valve buried under Claremont planters
The master valve at this Claremont home was hidden beneath planters and pavers, so in March 2026 our technician located it electronically before digging. Once it was exposed, both the isolation valve and the master valve were replaced, as neither one was holding water.
The controller for the two-station system needed attention too. It was fixed properly to the wall, and its programming was cleaned up: extra start times removed and the date and time set correctly. The owner was then taken through the new settings. When neither the isolation valve nor the master valve will hold, the retic can't be properly shut off, and the pipework past them stays under pressure all the time. A separate leak had still not been pinned down when the visit ended.
