Coastal dune sand: fast drainage and your sprinklers
Soil — Quindalup coastal sands. Fast-draining coastal dunes mean the margin for a blocked or misaligned sprinkler is tiny — regular system checks plus wetting agents protect lawns in this sand.
Groundwater & bores. Domestic bores perform well across this sand-plain suburb, and an older bore is often worth servicing rather than abandoning. Bore watering follows the standard 2-day roster and the June-August sprinkler switch-off.
Rainfall — about 672mm a year. Annual rain near 672mm and strongly seasonal (~77% May-Sep at Pearce Raaf); the practical schedule is full summer duty, tapering shoulder seasons, sprinklers off 1 June - 31 August.

Rehousing an Alkimos manifold at surface level
An Alkimos system had the station 2 valve fail at the coil, and the valve was replaced in its entirety rather than piecemeal. While the manifold was open, our technician did the work that pays off later: every wire connection was taped and gel clipped, including connections not directly involved in the fault, and the manifold rehoused with its lid set at surface level.
A lid at surface level is the difference between a five-minute check and an excavation next time. Sprinklers that had been grown over were cleared — heads swallowed by planting cannot throw properly no matter what pressure reaches them — and the controller programmed for a 5:00am start on the property's watering days.
Doing the neighbouring connections while the box is open costs minutes and prevents the next callout.

Local reticulation questions
Yes, but get the City's approval first. Alkimos is in the City of Wanneroo. Irrigation pipes and connections shall be laid beneath the nature strip between 150mm and 300mm deep.
Generally yes — Alkimos sits over accessible groundwater, which is why garden bores are common here. That said, two neighbouring blocks can differ on yield and iron content, so it's an assessment rather than a given. Bores, pumps and bore-fed retic are all work we do.
Alkimos sits on Quindalup coastal sands. There is almost no reserve moisture in that profile, so even coverage matters more here than almost anywhere. The most common thing we get booked for in Alkimos is controller work, so that's where the technician starts. The schedule is built around about 10mm on each rostered day — split into two cycles inside the same watering window when the ground won't take it in one.
Water Corporation sets Alkimos's sprinkler days: check yours with your street number and postcode. In Perth and Mandurah that's two days a week, once before 9am or after 6pm, bores included; elsewhere the roster can differ. The winter switch-off runs from 1 June to 31 August. After it, the Bureau of Meteorology's RAAF Pearce station averages about 67 mm of rain in September and 37 mm in October, a little drier than central Perth's 80 mm.
A controller repair isn't quoted: book the visit and it's diagnosed and fixed on site. An upgrade, say to Wi-Fi, can be quoted without a visit: tell us if your controller is hardwired or plugs into a power point (a photo helps). If it needs an electrician, we arrange one.
