A South Guildford system had a master valve (the main valve that shuts the whole system off) stuck open, which our technician confirmed by opening the valve manually. The more interesting discovery was at the other end: there was no master valve wire connected in the controller port at all.
A master valve with no connection to the controller cannot be commanded to close, so the mainline stays pressurised permanently — and any leak downstream runs continuously instead of only during a watering cycle. The isolation valve was buried and awkwardly positioned in its box, which made access harder than it needed to be.
Both the master valve and the station 1 solenoid (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) were replaced, and the wiring back to the controller checked to confirm the master valve is now genuinely controlled. It is worth checking that a master valve is wired, not merely present.
