Grey Bassendean sand: fast-draining and water-repellent
Soil — Bassendean sands. Ancient, heavily leached dune sand — expect non-wetting patches and fast drainage. Matched nozzles, soil wetters and frequent short cycles keep it green.

Tree roots growing into a Queens Park valve
A Queens Park master valve (the main valve that shuts the whole system off) was leaking, and when our technician opened it up the reason was clear: small tree roots had grown into the valve itself. Roots follow water, and a valve that has been weeping slightly for a season provides exactly the conditions they seek — which means a minor leak recruits the very thing that turns it into a major one.
The master valve was replaced, and the station 1 and 2 solenoids (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) as well, both in poor condition and not operating correctly. Two sprinklers were replaced and the controller programmed.
This is a good argument for dealing with small valve leaks promptly rather than tolerating them. A valve seeping into open soil near planting will attract roots, and root ingress turns a component replacement into an excavation.
Valves under a brick driveway in Queens Park
