A Parkwood pump losing prime, and why
A Parkwood pump kept losing its prime within a short time of being started. The cause was below the foot valve: a home-made fitting held together with silicone and duct tape.
A pump draws water up from below, so any air getting in on the suction side breaks the prime — and unlike a leak on the pressure side, it does not necessarily show as water on the ground. It simply stops the pump doing its job.
Our technician showed the fittings to the owner and explained what they were doing, then replaced the foot valve and the fittings below it with proper compliant connections, remaking every threaded joint. Improvised repairs on the suction side of a pump are among the most misleading faults in irrigation, because the symptom appears at the pump and the cause is somewhere underneath it.
