Sand over limestone: what it means for your retic
Soil — Spearwood sands. This limestone-derived sand holds little water, favouring a watering-day run split into two shorter cycles. Alkaline soil and caprock are normal here — worth knowing before any retic excavation.
Groundwater & bores. Domestic bores perform well across this sand-plain suburb, and an older bore is often worth servicing rather than abandoning. Bore watering follows the standard 2-day roster and the June-August sprinkler switch-off.

Tracing a common-wire break in North Perth
A North Perth fault came down to the common wire (the shared return wire every valve uses), which is worth understanding because of how its failure presents. Every solenoid (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) on a retic system shares a common return wire back to the controller.
Break it, and it is not one station that stops — it is potentially all of them, which looks far more like a dead controller than a wiring fault. Our technician located the solenoid, checked the coil and rejoined the wires at the valve, then took ohms readings back at the controller to see what the circuit was actually doing.
Those readings showed a break in the common wire. The break was repaired, the readings re-checked to confirm the circuit was sound, and the solenoid replaced.
Measuring resistance at the controller is how you tell a wiring fault from a valve fault without digging up either.
A six-station controller with room to grow in North Perth
In November 2025 a North Perth system got a new Hunter X-Core six-station controller, installed and programmed in the same visit. The existing cable had spare wires in it, which left two stations free on the new controller, so a garden bed or a new lawn zone can be added later without running new cable.
One surprise: some old lighting cables had been connected to the old controller. They were disconnected, taped off and set aside. It's a reminder that swapping a controller means checking what every wire is for before connecting anything.
