A mismatched coil on a Noranda system
A Noranda system had none of its stations working, and the cause was a mismatch between the controller and the valves. The controller sends AC to every station, which is what a conventional mains-powered controller does — but one valve was fitted with a DC latching coil, the type used with battery-operated controllers.
The two are not interchangeable: a latching coil expects a brief pulse to flip it open or closed, and a continuous AC supply will not operate it. Our technician replaced the controller, rewired the valve manifold back to a standard configuration and swapped the DC latching coil for a conventional one, then programmed the unit.
Mixed control types on one system are a real trap, usually the residue of a battery timer fitted at some point to work around a wiring fault.
