Reticulation Dianella

A Dianella front garden was being replanted, and the retic was dead. On site we found a submersible bore pump that had been tagged out and wasn't operational — and underneath the story, an older scheme-water connection running off a tap stem. The easy sell would have been a new pump. For garden beds this size, a pump was overkill.

So we recommended the cheaper-to-run, right-sized path: reconnect the scheme supply instead of replacing the pump, and design the watering around the new planting. After talking through the plans with the client's landscaper, we built a dripline system to suit: a new four-station controller wired in by the electrician, new solenoid valves off the existing mainline, a pressure-regulated feed and 13mm dripline at 350mm spacings, surface-laid ready to be hidden under mulch. Water at the roots, no pump to maintain.

The job was to add a station so the lawn and garden stopped sharing one valve. We cut a new 40mm valve in beside the existing one, replaced and extended the 20mm line through the lawn, relocated the existing pop-ups and added new ones on the far side, all running MP Rotators for even coverage.

Then the wiring got interesting: three spare wires at the valve, none of them joined anywhere in the field — and the controller, station 1 and station 2 all running on different wiring. System checks showed water running through every zone no matter which station was on: both valves stuck open. Cleaning them out didn't hold, so we cut both out and fitted new 40mm valves. Retested until everything ran only when it was told to.

A state housing provider asked us to reinstate a reticulation line that had been disconnected for years — a landscaping strip along one boundary and the front beds serving the rear units, with a survey plan marking the line they wanted live again.

Two technicians spent the first hours testing by process of elimination whether the old line could simply be recommissioned. It couldn't — and the site's controller was damaged beyond use. So we re-worked what was worth keeping: modified the existing pipework, capped the redundant run, and set the beds up on two individually controlled tap timers with new pipe, risers and micro jets where coverage was missing. The strip that hadn't seen water in years came back on, bed by bed.

Not every job needs to be a big one. A Dianella callout in December 2025 was a broken sprinkler head in a U-shaped garden bed, and the repair itself came down to one damaged micro spray and one pop-up sprinkler. What takes the time is everything around it. Our technician located and tested the controller before touching a head — in Dianella, controller and timer faults are the pattern we see most, so proving the controller is actually driving each station is where the diagnosis starts. Risers and nozzles were then replaced and adjusted to restore the spray pattern, and every head, filter and nozzle on the system was cleared and adjusted. The whole system was run through a full test on completion to confirm each station was operating as intended, rather than assuming the replaced parts were the end of it.

The stories above are the exceptions — the everyday is volume. 635 jobs completed in Dianella, 168 of them in the last two years, alongside 590+ maintenance visits under commercial facilities and housing maintenance programs. If a Dianella system can fail a certain way, odds are we've already fixed one just like it.
