Sand over limestone: what it means for your retic
Soil — Spearwood sands. Spearwood-belt sand sheds water quickly past roots; wetting agents and short repeat cycles keep gardens even. Limestone near the surface calls for experience when digging in new lines.
Groundwater & bores. The superficial aquifer here typically supports domestic garden bores — a big running-cost saving over scheme water for lawns. Note bore users now share the standard 2-days-per-week roster and the 1 June - 31 August switch-off.
Rainfall — about 718mm a year. Averages about 718mm a year at the Perth Metro gauge with roughly 79% falling May-September — so the controller should step down through autumn and observe the 1 June - 31 August sprinkler switch-off.

Corroded wiring in Mirrabooka limestone
A larger Mirrabooka system had five stations with broken or corroded wiring, and the ground it is buried in explains much of that. The wiring at the station 12 valves runs underneath a 100mm mainline sitting roughly 800mm to a metre below the surface, in high-limestone, rocky ground — which makes even testing those valves difficult without bringing in earthmoving equipment. Our technician repaired the wiring fault that had cut water to the garden bed station, and excavated two solenoids (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) suspected of being wired together and coming on as a pair. Where rewiring means excavating a metre of limestone along the length of a mainline, the honest answer is often not to rewire at all: our recommendation was battery-operated node controllers at the valves, with the pump started on pressure demand rather than from the controller, removing the need for a wire run to those stations altogether.
A break in the Mirrabooka common wire
Every valve on a reticulation system shares one cable, the common wire, so a single break in it can silence several stations at once. At a Mirrabooka property in April 2026, our technician potholed along the mainline to find the solenoids for stations 3 and 4 and the break in the common wire.
The billed work also included replacing a solenoid valve and fitting a new round valve box cover, so the valve can be reached next time without digging. Potholing along the mainline is slow, careful work, but it finds the fault without turning the whole garden over.

Local reticulation questions
Yes, no prior approval needed. Mirrabooka is in the City of Stirling. Ideally your waterwise verge won't need a permanent irrigation system once established. If you do require irrigation, sub-surface drip irrigation is recommended. The sprinkler roster is a Water Corporation matter, so it doesn't change at the council boundary.
