Grey Bassendean sand: fast-draining and water-repellent
Soil — Bassendean sands. Bassendean sands hold the least moisture of any Perth soil; gardens rely almost entirely on well-tuned reticulation, making head spacing and run times critical.
Groundwater & bores. Shallow sandy geology means bores in this area usually deliver reliable garden water; pairing one with well-tuned reticulation keeps large lawns affordable. The 2-day roster and winter ban apply to bore watering too.
Rainfall — about 718mm a year. Local average is ~718mm a year, about 79% of it in the May-September wet season (Perth Metro) — reprogram seasonally and switch sprinklers off for the mandatory June-August ban.

Splitting a Malaga station around new infrastructure
A Malaga site had electrical infrastructure installed across part of the front garden, cutting the planted area in two. Our technician's recommendation was to split the front garden beds into two separate stations, one either side of the new equipment — and a spare wire was already available at the controller to make that possible without trenching.
Where a permanent structure divides an area, keeping it on a single station means running pipework around or under the obstruction and accepting a compromise on both halves. On the existing station 1, two pop-ups no longer serving anything were deleted and capped, a break in the line repaired and five nozzles replaced with MP rotators.
Removing redundant heads while adding rotator nozzles works in the same direction: both leave more pressure for the heads that remain.

Local reticulation questions
Yes, no council permission needed. Malaga is in the City of Swan. Dial 1100 for Dial before You Dig or go online prior to any works commencing on site.
Generally yes — Malaga sits over accessible groundwater, which is why garden bores are common here. That said, two neighbouring blocks can differ on yield and iron content, so it's an assessment rather than a given. Bores, pumps and bore-fed retic are all work we do.
Malaga sits on Bassendean sands. That is Perth's least water-retentive sand, and the one most likely to repel water once dry. The most common thing we get booked for in Malaga is solenoid & valve repairs, so that's where the technician starts. We set run times to deliver about 10mm on each of your two rostered days, and split the run into two cycles inside the same watering window where the soil needs it.
Water Corporation sets Malaga's sprinkler days: check yours with your street number and postcode. In Perth and Mandurah that's two days a week, once before 9am or after 6pm, bores included; elsewhere the roster can differ. The winter switch-off runs from 1 June to 31 August. After it, the Bureau of Meteorology's Perth Metro station averages about 80 mm of rain in September and 40 mm in October.
