Coastal dune sand: fast drainage and your sprinklers
Soil — Quindalup coastal sands. Coastal sand this young holds almost no reserve moisture — gardens depend on the reticulation applying water evenly, making nozzle coverage checks worthwhile.
Groundwater & bores. The superficial aquifer here typically supports domestic garden bores — a big running-cost saving over scheme water for lawns. Note bore users now share the standard 2-days-per-week roster and the 1 June - 31 August switch-off.

A Hillarys controller stripped back and rewired
A Hillarys system had a solenoid (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) failing in the area the owner was concerned about, which our technician established and replaced. The larger piece of work was at the controller, which was stripped back and rewired.
Rewiring a controller rather than replacing it is worth doing where the unit itself is sound: terminal connections loosen, corrode or get crossed over years of repairs, and a careful rewire restores reliable switching without the cost of a new controller and the reprogramming that follows. One design note was recorded for the future: the system was originally designed for scheme water, and the lawn areas appear to have had 20mm PVC installed.
Knowing what a system was designed around matters when anything about the supply changes — pipe sized for one source and pressure will not necessarily suit another.
Retaining walls in the way of a Hillarys verge split
The request at this Hillarys property, in December 2023, was to split the verge into two stations by running a new PVC line beneath the retaining walls. The difficulty is where the valves are: all of them sit up at house level, under yucca trees, with several tiers of retaining wall between them and the verge.
Our technician's assessment was that a second station looked out of reach without a very large amount of excavation through those walls, and that the excavation is the only way it can be done. A trench was dug along the retaining wall to take a line that had been lying on the surface. Pipe left on top of the ground is easily damaged by sun, feet and garden tools, which is why it belongs underground.

Local reticulation questions
Yes, it's a permissible verge treatment. Hillarys is in the City of Joondalup. Irrigation pipes should be laid beneath the verge at a depth between 150mm and 300mm.
Generally yes — Hillarys sits over accessible groundwater, which is why garden bores are common here. That said, two neighbouring blocks can differ on yield and iron content, so it's an assessment rather than a given. Bores, pumps and bore-fed retic are all work we do.
Hillarys sits on Quindalup coastal sands. There is almost no reserve moisture in that profile, so even coverage matters more here than almost anywhere. The most common thing we get booked for in Hillarys is controller work, so that's where the technician starts. The schedule is built around about 10mm on each rostered day — split into two cycles inside the same watering window when the ground won't take it in one.
Water Corporation sets Hillarys's sprinkler days: check yours with your street number and postcode. In Perth and Mandurah that's two days a week, once before 9am or after 6pm, bores included; elsewhere the roster can differ. The winter switch-off runs from 1 June to 31 August. After it, the Bureau of Meteorology's Swanbourne station averages about 77 mm of rain in September and 44 mm in October, close to central Perth's 80 mm.
