Sand over limestone: what it means for your retic
Soil — Spearwood sands. Sand over limestone drains rapidly and can turn water-repellent in summer — a wetting agent, plus splitting the run into two shorter cycles inside the same watering window (both before 9am, or both after 6pm), is the standard fix in this belt.
Groundwater & bores. Sandy soils over shallow groundwater make this classic garden-bore territory; running retic from a bore takes garden watering off the scheme-water bill. Bores follow the same 2-day roster and winter switch-off as scheme users.
Rainfall — about 718mm a year. Around 718mm falls annually (Perth Metro data), close to 79% of it May-September; gardens rely almost entirely on reticulation from November to March, when scheduling accuracy matters most.

Ten units, ten controllers, in Glendalough
A Glendalough complex runs ten separate irrigation systems — one per unit, each on its own two-station controller. Our technician inspected and tested all ten.
Three had flat backup batteries, which were replaced. On a multi-unit site that detail matters more than it does on a single house: each controller holds its own schedule and its own clock, so a flat backup battery in one unit means that garden drifts onto the wrong days after any power cut while the nine around it carry on, and nobody notices until the plants do.
Three sprinklers were adjusted and cleared along with their filters and nozzles, and two leaks in poly pipe were found during testing and repaired. Working a complex like this properly means testing every controller and every station, not sampling a few and assuming the rest match.
Broken risers caught on a Glendalough test
Routine testing is how small faults get caught before plants go dry. On a Glendalough site in February 2026, a scheduled system test found four broken rigid risers on station 2. Three were replaced and the fourth was plugged off, and three micro spray nozzles were replaced: two blocked, one missing altogether. Every other station tested as working.
Micro sprays are the easiest part of an irrigation system to lose track of. They sit exposed in garden beds, and a blocked or missing one simply leaves a dry patch that nobody notices until the plants show it. A station-by-station test finds them in minutes.

Local reticulation questions
Yes, no prior approval needed. Glendalough is in the City of Stirling. Ideally your waterwise verge won't need a permanent irrigation system once established. If you do require irrigation, sub-surface drip irrigation is recommended. Watering days are a separate matter — those come from Water Corporation, not the council.
Generally yes — Glendalough sits over accessible groundwater, which is why garden bores are common here. That said, two neighbouring blocks can differ on yield and iron content, so it's an assessment rather than a given. Bores, pumps and bore-fed retic are all work we do.
Glendalough sits on Spearwood sands. Water moves through it fast, and the sand can turn water-repellent once it dries out.
