Reticulation Balcatta

Some repairs are surgery, not patches. One Balcatta complex came to us in genuinely poor condition: field wiring spliced and re-spliced over the years, failing solenoid valves, sections that wouldn't run at all. Our techs started methodically — digging through tree roots to expose buried coils, repairing connection after connection — until the evidence was undeniable: the site needed a complete new field wire, not more band-aids. We relaid it, and the final test revealed one last gremlin: a master valve seized in the always-on position, quietly bleeding water. Replaced, retested, documented — three visits, and a system with years of life back in it.

A more recent Balcatta call shows the other end of the scale: a system that wouldn't run, no obvious cause. Meter checks traced it to a master solenoid coil hiding under the bin store, reading 3.2 ohms. A healthy coil reads 20 to 60 ohms, so 3.2 meant the winding had shorted on itself — and because this was the master valve, one shorted coil was enough to stop the entire system. Located, replaced, controller reset and reprogrammed to the correct watering days, all in a single visit. That's what wire-tracing discipline buys: no guesswork, no parts-cannon, just the fault found and fixed.

Balcatta's grouped dwellings bring their own puzzles: on one duplex visit we serviced both units' systems — replaced nozzles and risers, swapped a tap-timer battery — and traced a hidden leak to a sleeve under the shared driveway, then replaced the poly run through it without lifting a single brick. Shared-system quirks are everyday work for us here.

A Balcatta job in December 2025 was reported as flooding near the bins and meter box, with no visible source. The cause was a riser that had snapped off underneath artificial turf — invisible from the surface, and free to pour water under the turf until it found somewhere to surface. Our technician located the break, repaired it and capped the base so the redundant riser could not leak again. With the leak stopped, the system was flushed, which brought up a blocked sprinkler at the end of the line; that head was replaced. Blockages at the far end are common after a leak, because debris entering through the break travels downstream and lodges at the last head. Every sprinkler was then adjusted so spray is thrown at the garden rather than across driveways and paths.
