A Port Kennedy system had station 1 sticking on — it came on with every other station rather than only its own. That is a specific fault worth naming, because it differs from a valve stuck permanently open. A solenoid valve (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) is held shut by water pressure trapped above its diaphragm, fed in through a small pilot hole.
Anything that lets that trapped pressure escape means the diaphragm can no longer hold itself down on the seat. Debris on the seat, a blocked pilot hole, a split diaphragm or a solenoid that is not screwed down tight will each do it — so the moment another station pressurises the mainline, this valve opens along with it. The result is one area watered on every cycle, several times what the schedule intended, while the rest of the system runs at reduced pressure.
Our technician replaced the station 1 solenoid, along with broken sprinklers and garden sprays, and repaired a leaking pipe near the driveway. A further system test was run and the controller programmed. If one zone is always wet, it is worth checking whether it is running when it should not be.
