A Hovea owner had attempted their own reticulation repairs a couple of months earlier, including replacing a solenoid (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station), and ended up with an entire station not working — by which point a good deal of the lawn had died. That is a common and expensive sequence. A valve replacement looks simple, and it is, provided the wiring is remade correctly and the station tested afterwards; when it is not, the failure is silent, and nobody discovers it until the grass shows it. Our technician replaced and raised several pop-ups, and swapped a leaking tap for a ball valve, which is the more durable fitting for something turned regularly. The most useful advice we can give on any do-it-yourself retic repair is to run the station afterwards and watch every head.
Verge planting and reticulation rules sit with the Shire of Mundaring, while watering days come from the Water Corporation sprinkler roster, not the council — worth checking both before any verge retic work. We're about 34 km from our Jandakot base, well inside the daily service runs.

Hills gravel: slopes, runoff and uneven sprinkler pressure
Soil — Darling Scarp gravels. Hills blocks sit on gravel over clay or rock: water either races off or perches, so per-zone cycle-and-soak scheduling beats one uniform program.
Groundwater & bores. Few viable garden bores exist this far up the scarp — the practical levers are controller upgrades, seasonal reprogramming and keeping every sprinkler head in spec.
Rainfall — about 755mm a year. Expect ~755mm annually per the Perth Airport M.O. gauge, heavily winter-weighted (~79% May-Sep): summer is effectively rain-free, so summer run times carry the garden.

Local reticulation questions
Not without approval first. Hovea is in the Shire of Mundaring.
Groundwater access around Hovea is limited, so bores are less common here and often not the right answer. A properly zoned system with matched sprinklers and a modern controller gets excellent results on scheme water instead.
Hovea sits on Darling Scarp gravels. On a slope that soil sheds water sideways before it soaks, and there are clay pockets underneath. Your technician confirms the profile on site before programming anything — Hovea blocks vary street to street.
Water Corporation sets Hovea's sprinkler days: check yours with your street number and postcode. In Perth and Mandurah that's two days a week, once before 9am or after 6pm, bores included; elsewhere the roster can differ. The winter switch-off runs from 1 June to 31 August. After it, the Bureau of Meteorology's Perth Airport station averages about 72 mm of rain in September and 43 mm in October, a little drier than central Perth's 80 mm.
