Sand over limestone: what it means for your retic
Soil — Spearwood sands. Yellow Spearwood sand over limestone drains freely, so splitting your watering-day run into two shorter cycles, with a wetting agent, beats one long soak. The shallow limestone also makes trenching for repairs harder than it looks.

Laying out a Hamilton Hill system by zone
A Hamilton Hill installation was planned around zones rather than around convenience. A 32mm supply line and the control wiring were laid from the controller position around the back of the house to the front corner, with 25mm mainline running along the back and sides and 25mm solenoid valves (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) positioned at each zoned watering area.
Putting the valve at the area it serves, rather than grouping every valve at one manifold near the tap, means shorter lateral runs and less pressure lost between valve and heads — which matters most on the areas furthest from the supply. A new four-station controller was hardwired in by our electrician.
Running the wire in the same trench as the supply line at installation is what makes that layout affordable; retrofitting a valve out at a distant zone later means a second trench.
