Sand over limestone: what it means for your retic
Soil — Spearwood sands. Spearwood-belt sand sheds water quickly past roots; wetting agents and short repeat cycles keep gardens even. Limestone near the surface calls for experience when digging in new lines.
Groundwater & bores. The superficial aquifer here typically supports domestic garden bores — a big running-cost saving over scheme water for lawns. Note bore users now share the standard 2-days-per-week roster and the 1 June - 31 August switch-off.
Rainfall — about 718mm a year. Around 718mm falls annually (Perth Metro data), close to 79% of it May-September; gardens rely almost entirely on reticulation from November to March, when scheduling accuracy matters most.

Five stations and four wires in Greenwood
A Greenwood system had an arithmetic problem: five stations wired in at the controller, and only four wires at the drop-out (where the controller's wiring goes underground) where the cable goes underground. Testing showed no continuity to any valve from either end — an open circuit, not a weak one — meaning the circuits were not reaching the solenoids at all, and there was no master solenoid wired in.
Our technician repaired a wire break at the drop-out, remade every connection there with gel-filled clips and housed the whole thing in a spotter box (a lidded box at ground level so it can be found again) so it stays dry and can be inspected without digging. The drop-out is where most retic wiring faults live — it is the transition from a protected run to buried cable, usually joined in open ground.
Counting the wires at each end is a quick way to find out whether a station has any path to its valve at all.
Roots around a cracked slip-fix in Greenwood
Leaks in the pipes were the reason for this Greenwood call-out in April 2024. Our technician found the leak on the reticulation pipe downstream of the isolation tap, at a cracked slip-fix with a heavy root system grown around it. The roots were removed and the leak repaired.
Knowing where a property's isolation valve sits is worth it, because it is the quickest way to shut off the retic when something goes wrong. Our technician also noticed that stations 1 and 2 were stuck open, a separate fault from the leak.

Local reticulation questions
Yes, it's a permissible verge treatment. Greenwood is in the City of Joondalup. Irrigation pipes should be laid beneath the verge at a depth between 150mm and 300mm.
