Sand over limestone: what it means for your retic
Soil — Spearwood sands. Classic Spearwood profile: free-draining sand, limestone beneath. Lawns respond best to two shorter cycles inside the same watering window (both before 9am, or both after 6pm), and sprinkler layouts need decent pressure to cover evenly.
Groundwater & bores. Sandy soils over shallow groundwater make this classic garden-bore territory; running retic from a bore takes garden watering off the scheme-water bill. Bores follow the same 2-day roster and winter switch-off as scheme users.

Two leaks and a blocked filter in East Fremantle
An East Fremantle system was tested across all four stations, and two separate leaks were found. The first was in pipe running under tree roots — a common failure in the older East Fremantle streets, where established trees and reticulation occupy the same ground and the roots slowly load the pipe until it splits.
The second was near a sprinkler, which usually has a different cause: movement at the head transmits to the fitting below it. Both were repaired.
A blocked nozzle and its filter were also replaced. Replacing the filter alongside the nozzle matters, because a filter that has done its job is holding the debris that would otherwise be in the nozzle, and fitting a clean nozzle behind a loaded filter simply moves the blockage along by a few weeks.
Untangling a doubled-up station in East Fremantle
At a commercial site in East Fremantle in October 2025, station 1 didn't add up. The wire in the controller's station 1 port read 19 ohms, and a second wire of the same colour, not connected to the controller at all, gave the same reading. That suggested two solenoids were sharing the station out in the field.
Our technician located the solenoid in question and replaced it. Then, using a spare wire found in the field, the station was rewired so each of the two solenoids could run on its own. Doubling valves onto one controller output is a common shortcut, but it means neither zone can be run or tested separately.

Local reticulation questions
Verge rules are set by your council, and East Fremantle is in the Town of East Fremantle.
