Sand over limestone: what it means for your retic
Soil — Spearwood sands. Sand over limestone drains rapidly and can turn water-repellent in summer — a wetting agent, plus splitting the run into two shorter cycles inside the same watering window (both before 9am, or both after 6pm), is the standard fix in this belt.
Groundwater & bores. Sandy soils over shallow groundwater make this classic garden-bore territory; running retic from a bore takes garden watering off the scheme-water bill. Bores follow the same 2-day roster and winter switch-off as scheme users.
Rainfall — about 718mm a year. Roughly 718mm a year here (Perth Metro), with about 79% of it falling May-September — the long dry rest of the year is why controller programming and coverage checks pay for themselves.

Worn valve bodies on a Currambine system
A Currambine system had a station staying on when it should not, reported as station 1. Tracing the wiring showed it was actually station 2 at fault — worth confirming before replacing anything, since the station number people report is often the one they can see running rather than the one that is stuck.
The station 2 solenoid (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) had a worn valve body and was replaced, after which it held closed correctly while other stations ran. A second problem then showed itself: water was flowing, but pressure was low across the system.
That traced to the master solenoid, which was not opening fully, again because of a worn valve body. Changing it restored full pressure.
Both faults share a cause — a valve body wears internally with age, and a valve that no longer seats or opens cleanly degrades the whole system rather than failing outright.
Only a dribble at the Currambine master valve
At this Currambine home in June 2025, the controller was faulty and not responding, so our technician replaced it. The master valve and the three station solenoids were cleaned and flushed out, and solenoids were replaced where required.
The master valve told the rest of the story. With its bleeder removed, water only dribbled out. On a healthy supply, opening the bleeder gives a strong flow, so a dribble points to a restriction somewhere before the valve rather than in the retic itself.
The fix sits on the plumbing side. It was agreed that a plumber would need to take out the isolation and check valve, flush the line and fit a new one, and that part of the job was left with the plumber.

Local reticulation questions
Yes, it's a permissible verge treatment. Currambine is in the City of Joondalup. Irrigation pipes should be laid beneath the verge at a depth between 150mm and 300mm.
Generally yes — Currambine sits over accessible groundwater, which is why garden bores are common here. Iron staining and yield are the two things worth establishing before you drill, and both are local to your block. We handle bores, pumps and the reticulation they feed.
Currambine sits on Spearwood sands. Water moves through it fast, and the sand can turn water-repellent once it dries out. The most common thing we get booked for in Currambine is controller work, so that's where the technician starts. We aim for around 10mm on each of your two watering days, and decide on site whether that wants one run or two cycles inside the same window.
Water Corporation sets Currambine's sprinkler days: check yours with your street number and postcode. In Perth and Mandurah that's two days a week, once before 9am or after 6pm, bores included; elsewhere the roster can differ. The winter switch-off runs from 1 June to 31 August. After it, the Bureau of Meteorology's Perth Metro station averages about 80 mm of rain in September and 40 mm in October.
