A common-wire break at an Aveley manifold
An Aveley system was not coming on at all, with a faulty master solenoid (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) or a wiring problem suspected. It was the wiring — specifically a break in the common wire (the shared return wire every valve uses), found at the valve manifold.
The location is worth noting. The manifold is where every valve's wiring converges, so it is both the most likely place for a common wire to be damaged and the most efficient place to check first: one excavation gives access to all the connections rather than tracing a run across the property.
Our technician repaired the wiring, then worked through the rest, repairing and replacing nozzles and pop-ups and fixing leaks, including on the verge station where broken pipes and sprinklers had been reported. Starting the search at the manifold turns a whole-property wire trace into a single hole.
