A Wellard system had six valves and no record of where they were. Our technician identified five.
Two needed replacing outright — they were coming on constantly, a mechanical failure rather than a wiring fault. One of those was found 800mm below the surface, deep enough that testing or maintaining it was impractical, so it was brought up closer to the surface when it was replaced.
That is worth doing whenever a valve is exposed: a valve at a workable depth turns every future visit into a short job. Two of the valves run off an add-a-station (a device that runs a second valve off an existing wire) unit, which drives two independently timed stations over a single pair of field wires — useful to know, because the wiring looks like one station until you know the device is there.
Mapping the five located valves also narrowed down where the remaining station 5 solenoid (the electrically-operated valve that feeds one station) must be.
